A World of Celebrations: Embracing Cultures at Witham Prospect!
At Witham Prospect School, we believe that celebrating different cultures is essential for building a community based on mutual respect, tolerance, and harmony. The end of November offered us a wonderful opportunity to immerse our children and young people in three vibrant celebrations: Thanksgiving, Albanian Day, and St. Andrew’s Day!
These inclusive, sensory-rich activities not only taught us about global traditions but also powerfully reinforced key skills in Communication and Interaction and PSHE.
Thanksgiving: Giving Thanks and Growing Skills (November 27th)
Our activities focused on the sensory elements of the harvest and the joy of togetherness:
- Sensory and Tactile Fun: Engaging with Sensory Tuff Trays filled with lentils, corn, feathers, and soft fabric leaves. We also used scented playdough infused with pumpkin spice, cinnamon, or vanilla (C4), creating calming and engaging sensory experiences.
- Expressing Gratitude: The core of the celebration was our ‘Thankful Tree’ activity, where learners chose or wrote something they were thankful for on a leaf. They also worked on their social skills by taking part in role-play dinner table activities.
- Practical Independence: Practicing fine motor food prep skills like spreading butter on bread or scooping mashed potato, and followed sequencing cards for setting a table, linking the celebration directly to practical independence.
These experiences encouraged early attention and helped our children and young people express thanks using signs, symbols, or simple words.
Albanian Day: A Taste of Home and Community
We love celebrating the unique heritage of our children and young people and staff! For Albanian Day, our residential staff went the extra mile to create a truly special evening.
The atmosphere was vibrant as everyone gathered for a special dinner, where they enjoyed tasting a variety of authentic Albanian foods. This was accompanied by traditional Albanian music, creating an immersive cultural experience. Sharing this meal was a powerful moment of community, helping everyone appreciate the rich traditions brought by our Albanian children and young people.
St. Andrew’s Day: Honouring Scotland (November 30th)
We finished the month by celebrating Scotland’s patron saint, St. Andrew, focusing on the colours and sounds of the nation:
- Sensory Flag Exploration: Our sensory trays were filled with blue and white materials (fabrics, ribbons, feathers) to represent the Scottish flag, the Saltire. We also explored different Tartan textures with adult support.
- Music and Calm: We played Scottish music, including bagpipes and traditional folk tunes, during a calm sensory session.
- Creative and Practical Skills: Participating in Flag-making activities, either through cutting and sticking or painting the flag using adapted brushes.
- Communication: Through PECS or iPad choices, our children and young people selected their preferred Scottish-themed snacks or activities, developing an early understanding of the holiday through themed elements.
By incorporating these cultural celebrations into our curriculum, we ensure that every child and young person feels their heritage is valued and that they grow up with a deep appreciation and respect for the diverse world around them.
