Vibrant Rhythms and Rich Traditions: Celebrating Africa Day at Witham Prospect School
At Witham Prospect School, true inclusion means ensuring that the diverse cultures of our staff and young people are not just recognised, but joyfully celebrated. Recently, our school and residential houses came alive with colour, music, and community spirit as we hosted our fantastic Africa Day celebration.
This event was a beautiful reflection of our commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), providing a space where our team and young people could share their heritage, learn from one another, and build a deep sense of mutual respect.
A Feast for the Senses: Outfits and Traditional Food
The day began with a stunning display of traditional clothing. Staff and young people proudly wore vibrant, beautifully patterned African attire, showcasing the rich textile histories of different regions. Walking through the school felt like walking through a festival of color, which instantly sparked curiosity, conversation, and a sense of shared pride.
Of course, no cultural celebration is complete without food! Our incredible team worked hard to prepare a truly spectacular African feast serving up a variety of traditional dishes, such as; Efo Riro, Poundo Yam, Jollof Rice, Puff Puff and Zobo drink, a Nigerian beverage made from dried Hibiscus sabdariffa, known for its deep-red colour, tangy flavour and health benefits such as supporting blood pressure, liver health, and providing antioxidants; introducing our young people to rich new aromas, textures, and tastes. The dining rooms were filled with laughter and clean plates as both staff and children enjoyed the sumptuous meals to their absolute satisfaction.
The Heartbeat of the Day: African Drumming Sessions
The absolute highlight of the afternoon was an interactive African drumming workshop led by a fantastic external provider.
Music is a powerful, universal language that transcends words, making it an incredible tool for our learners. The drumming session provided an immersive sensory experience that targeted several of our core goals:
- Sensory Coordination: Feeling the physical vibration of the djembe drums and listening to changing tempos.
- Inclusive Communication: For our non-verbal learners, matching the rhythm of the group allowed them to communicate, connect, and express themselves entirely through sound and movement.
- Shared Initiative: Staff and young people sat side-by-side in a drumming circle, creating a unified heartbeat that echoed through the entire school.
Inclusivity in All Forms
The success of Africa Day comes down to the passion of our community. The event truly highlighted our “home away from home” ethos, where every individual’s background is treated with dignity and celebration.
