A Wee Bit of Scotland: Celebrating Burns Night and Diversity
At Witham Prospect School, our commitment to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) means we take every opportunity to celebrate the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our community and the wider UK. Last week, we traded our usual routine for a bit of Scottish flair as we celebrated Burns Night!
Burns Night commemorates the life and poetry of Robert Burns, but for our children and young people, it was a fantastic gateway to exploring Scottish heritage through taste, sight, and sound.
A Feast for the Senses: Traditional Scottish Fare
You can’t have a Burns Night celebration without a traditional supper! Our young people had the opportunity to explore classic Scottish flavours, which provided a wonderful sensory experience:
- Haggis, Neeps, and Tatties: Students tried the famous trio! We focused on the different textures—the graininess of the haggis contrasted with the smooth mash of the “neeps” (turnips) and “tatties” (potatoes).
- Shortbread & Cranachan: For those with a sweet tooth, we explored the buttery crunch of shortbread and the creamy, oaty textures of traditional desserts.
Why EDI Matters: Celebrating Scottish Heritage
Celebrating Burns Night is about more than just a meal; it’s a core part of our EDI strategy. By introducing our children and young people to the traditions of Scotland, we are:
- Promoting Mutual Respect: Learning that different parts of the UK have unique languages, music, and traditions.
- Broadening Horizons: Encouraging curiosity about the world beyond our immediate surroundings.
- Fostering Inclusion: Ensuring that our staff, children and young people from all backgrounds see a wide variety of cultures valued and celebrated within their school and home environment.

Burns Night reminded us that no matter where a tradition comes from, the themes of friendship, food, and fun are universal.
