Big Garden Bird Watch: Nature in Action!

Witham Prospect School went wild for the Big Garden Bird Watch! We turned our grounds into a sensory nature trail to help our learners connect with the environment.

Our “Birdie” Highlights:

  • Spotting & Recording: Using binoculars and simple tally charts to find and track local birds.
  • Caring for Wildlife: Creating DIY bird feeders and setting up feeding stations across the school.
  • Hands-On Learning: Building nests from natural materials and matching symbols to pictures of English birds.
  • Sensory Exploration: Taking quiet moments to listen to birdsong.

Why It Matters

These activities were designed to boost cognition and communication through symbol matching and independence through observation. By exploring nature through sight, sound, and touch, our children and young people developed environmental awareness and curiosity in a sensory-rich way.

Promoting British Values

This pupil-led exploration is a fantastic way to promote Fundamental British Values:

  • Mutual Respect: Learning to care for all living things.
  • Individual Liberty: Making independent choices during crafts and nature walks.
  • Democracy: Adapting activities based on what our children and young people are most interested in.

From the classroom to our residential “home away from home,” we’ve loved seeing our young people take flight with their new skills!
